          Honorary guest, Senator Murphy addressed issues of special education, about which he has a special interest due to his seat on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.  Senator Murphy's shares his dedication to special education matters with wife, Catherine Holahan, who was formerly the Managing Attorney of the Children-at-Risk unit of Connecticut Legal Services, Inc., a statewide group of attorneys who advocated through systemic policy change and individual representation for improved access to quality education for low-income students.

          Attorney Judith Gran, nationally recognized for her tireless work on behalf of students and adults with disabilities, was the honored guest speaker.  Among Ms. Gran's many accomplishments, she was a founding  member of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates ("COPAA"), a national organization of attorneys, advocates and parents dedicated to securing high quality educational services for children with disabilities.  Additionally, she has conducted class action litigation to obtain community services for institutionalized persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Montana, California, Illinois and Tennessee.

          Attorney Howard Klebanoff, nationally recognized in the fight for special education, was honored for his contributions here in Connecticut. and nationally, to the educational rights of students with disabilities. 


          He helped write key legislation designed to protect the rights of people with disabilities and their families, and is considered one of Connecticut's most distinguished attorneys in special education law. The University of Connecticut established the Klebanoff Institute of Special Education in recognition of his work on behalf of children with disabilities. childhood to post-secondary education.
